Born 1940 History of the Year 1940
The decisive year 1940 is said to have marked a turning point in the history of the political and economic history of the USA. As the United States produced weapons of war and became, as President Franklin D. Roosevelt put it, an “arsenal of democracy,” the country underwent a dramatic shift in the domestic economic and social patterns that set the template for the postwar years. The most significant historical events of that time were the Great Depression, World War II, and the rise of the Soviet Union. Take a look back at some of America’s most significant events from the 1940s and 1950s.
When Europe fell apart in 1939, the United States began to escape the effects of the Great Depression of 1930-39. As it grew and declined between 1933 and 1940, Roosevelt’s New Deal softened its impact, but did not end the economic crisis.
The United States, a country that had not yet been attacked by Japan and had not yet entered World War II, became a major player in the war against the Soviet Union and its allies. In the months and years that followed, other countries joined both sides of the war, with the United States entering the conflict in December 1941.
The tensions and instability caused by the Allied war debts in the 1920s and 1930s showed that it was unreasonable to expect virtually any bankrupt European nation to be able to pay for the goods they bought in the US. The American economy would now have to be transformed into what President Roosevelt had called the “arsenal of democracy” a whole year earlier, in December 1940. Roosevelt knew from the news decoded a week after Pearl Harbor that Germany and Italy were now prepared to go to war with the US if Japan did so. As a result, DuPont, like the rest of the US industrial sector, had to devote all its resources to producing war materials, even though the United States had entered World War II at the end of 1941.
It was explicitly intended to reverse the post-World War I peace treaty, but it seems to have mattered little to the US.
When war broke out in Europe in September 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared that the United States would remain neutral under the law and asked all Americans who remained neutral in their minds to do so. This measure authorized the President to grant military aid to Nazi Germany, which invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941.
The Neutrality Act of 1939 allowed warring parties to purchase war material from the United States, but only on a cash-for-carry basis. Lend-Lease was so successful that it enabled Britain and the Soviet Union to fight the Axis until the US entered World War II at the end of 1941, after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Roosevelt retook this position when the US joined the Allies in Europe, and it was officially entered the war in December 1941. The Neutrality Act was re-enacted in 1942 and 1943 under the Neutralisation Act.
After returning to the US in April 1939, Lindbergh became a central figure in the America First movement, and in 1940 he was a leading figure in the forces determined to keep the United States out of the war in Europe. Today, the Maas-Argonne campaign is barely remembered, but it was the first major US military action of World War II and came at a crucial time for the US in its war against the Axis.
After the Great Depression, the consumer economy came to a standstill, and the ordinary recession became the defining event of the 1930 “s. The war brought a return to prosperity, but the war brought a common downturn in the US economy and a sharp decline in consumer spending. In the decades after World War II, the country became one of the two dominant superpowers, increasingly turning to international engagement in Europe and the Middle East. In the post-war period, the United States consolidated its position as the world’s second-largest economy after Germany and became a major player in international trade, international finance, and foreign policy.
Although the United States has not joined the League of Nations, it has worked closely with international organizations on issues such as trade and drug trafficking.
While others began to prepare for America’s entry into World War II and prospered, Americans were stuck in the financial filth of the Great Depression. Although the United States did not enter the war until December 1941, it began providing the Allies with substantial military supplies and other assistance in September 1940. In the late 1940 “s and early 1950” s, we weathered the depression and devastating war, and lived through our childhood under the cloud of possible nuclear war.
The United States entered the war just two months after the start of the war, after the Japanese bombed the American fleet. This signaled the beginning of World War II, a date that will live in disgrace as one of the most devastating events in US history.
